Mention southeast Florida and the first thing that most people think of is South Beach – white sand beaches draped from end to end in bikini-clad sun-worshippers, volleyball nets, parasailing and partying in the streets. Sure, South Beach has its finer points – a little further down the road and you’ll find yourself in Bal Harbour, the tony village coveted by luxury travelers, and you really can’t be the entertainment factor on Ocean Drive on any given night. But for those who want a little more privacy and recluse, there’s something a little less flashy but just as luxurious only minutes from Miami Beach.
Turnberry Isle Miami, one of Marriott’s newest Autograph Collection hotels, is located just minutes from Fort Lauderdale and Miami in the city of Adventura, and is a welcome escape from the mayhem synonymous with South Beach and southeast Florida.
Turnberry Isle Miami sits on two 18-hole championship golf courses, boasts a 25,000 square foot Four-Star Spa, three heated pools and four restaurants. And that’s just the beginning.
Take the early morning 3-hour flight to Fort Lauderdale and you can be relaxing at the resort’s Laguna pool by lunch. From there, the options are endless.
The Spa: It’s easy to spend an entire day in this serene sanctuary. My advice: start your day with a yoga class (Sarah Gold, who teaches both beginners and advanced students, and will put your mind and body at ease within 5 minutes) then book a spa treatment to completely unwind. Enjoy the relaxation rooms and steam room, or just set out for the pool.
Pools: Turnberry Isle has three outdoor swimming pool (adults-only, family, and kids pools). You can rent a private cabana that comes with your own TV and dressing room, or just grab a lounge chair in the sun. If you’re seeking a little adventure, head to the 35-foot waterslide. For the ultimate refined laziness, grab a raft and set off along the resort’s lazy river. For the worker types among us, you can get WiFi at the pools so it’s entirely possible to soak up the sun and get work done.
Restaurants: There a four restaurants and five bars at Turnberry Isle. The best part: every dish served at any of these restaurants is seasoned with fresh herbs, spices and vegetables from the resort’s chef’s garden (more on that later on). Bourbon Steak is Chef Michael Mina’s contemporary American steak house. Cascata Grill features American cuisine, Laguna Grill is at the main pool and serves traditional “pool” food (burgers, wraps, salads, smoothies), and the Beach Club Grill is a seaside eatery with indoor and outdoor patio dining, located at Turberry Isle’s private Beach Club.
Activities: No matter what you like to do, there’s something to amuse you at Turnberry Isle. Tennis courts, two 18-hole golf courses, kids camps, and a private Beach Club with volleyball courts and wave runner rentals are available to guests. On rainy days, the Adventura Mall is just across the street – one of the biggest malls in America, this shopping palace has everything from budget retailers to designer boutiques and department stores.
Chef’s Garden: One of the highlights of Turnberry Isle is the lush landscapes that surround the resort, including the chef’s garden. On any given day, chef’s of the resort lead complimentary tours, showcasing the various plants, herbs, vegetables and fruit trees that are planted here. You can taste test some of the rarer breeds, like sugar apples and dragon fruits.
In the Chef’s Garden, you’ll find various treats including pineapple sage, rosemary, thyme, bay leaf, mint, basil, tarragon, chives, lemongrass, fennel, sugar cane, zucchini, three varieties of bananas, sugar apples, miracle fruit, star fruit, dragon fruit, lychee, kumquats, mangos, Florida and Haas avocados, Persian and key limes, pomegranate, papaya, tomatoes, Swiss chard, eggplant, peppers, a Florida orange tree and much more.
Simply put: Whether you want to spa, swim, golf, dine, entertain the kids or just get away from the workweek, Turnberry Isle is a much-needed oasis in Miami.
